STUBBORN LEAVES

The wind is easy at first
A slight tug at stubborn leaves
Ruffed to the east
Before the speed rises
And the rapid flutter
Stands each limb at full attention.

From a distance the
Leaves swarm
In search of some semblance
To the evergreen’s needled cover
To leave bare-limbed
The thickened trunk.
